Tarp sculpture

In an effort to understand some of the materials that I have been using a small project was born called ‘Tarp a Day’. Over the period of around 2 weeks a large piece of tarpaulin & length of rope was used to make a simple sculpture in various places. Temporary & only lasting for 5 minutes these sculptures were made in a space then folded away & carried off. The portableness of the materials is intrinsic to the project as the question of what the sculpture is began to come to the fore as the days went on. In a conversation with a neighbour a few days into the project we discussed that the sculpture was both the wrapped object during the few minutes of the work & the folded materials in the bag being carried around.

These wrapping sculptures were made with a restriction in mind of only taking 2 photos. 1 in square ratio showing the sculpture in its surrounding context & one photo of a part of detail. This was so that I could document the work effectively & so that I would study the work more carefully during its few minutes of its being.

Following this 16 days of concentrated making the tarp & rope were taken to a specific location to be used. This approach was potentially less successful in terms of producing interesting forms but was as useful in allowing me to survey an urban setting. This whole project & a running theme in my work is about taking note of our built environment.
