This edition shows the making of a home in Austin, Texas which was built on a former industrial wasteland. It is no question that every episode on the series is filmed beautifully but this instalment had a particular point of view that stands out. It brings a Utopian vs Dystopian narrative. The protagonist building becomes what is perceived to be the ideal home for embracing nature & having a regenerative impact on the surrounding environment. A quality that all development needs to tent towards. With regards to architecture, sustainability should’t be the benchmark anymore. At the very least a project should be sustainable, but rather, regeneration is where the focus should be & this home is one example.

This episode was keen to draw a contrast between how the land was pre-development & what has become. There is a wonderful section, detailed below, showing the industrial relics in their ‘Beautiful ruin’ within the landscape. It is tied together with the activity of local urban exploring where the home’s owner explores such spaces with in his city. In this part of Austin it is described how there are industrial wastelands within the city limit & how areas have been subject to ‘Industrial misuse of the land’. This building shows how recognition of space, regeneration of the wild & considerate architecture help to enrich a place. In addition it is a project that can spur on further movement & encourages similar ethics.
